How to buy it from the Money app

  1.  Log in to the Money app and go to Transact.
  2. Tap Buy and select Buy prepaid or claim free basic electricity.
  3. Choose your recipient or the meter number and tap Next.
  4. Enter the amount you want to buy and add a reference and notification if necessary. Tap Next.
  5. Review the details of your purchase and tap Buy.
  6. You will now see your voucher number and choose how you want to share it. Tap Finish.

How to buy it on your Online Banking

  1. Log in to Online Banking and click on Buy, then click on Buy or claim free electricity.
  2. Choose the electricity type, Prepaid or Free Basic Electricity, you want to buy.
  3. For prepaid – enter the meter number with the option to save the recipient for future purchases. Click on Next.
  4. Choose an account to pay from and then click Next.
  5. Review your purchase and click on Buy.
  6. You can then view or download your token now or later. You can also download or print your record of purchase.

How to buy it on Cellphone Banking

  1. Dial *120*001#
  2. Register or log in with your 5-digit cellphone banking PIN.
  3. From the main menu, choose Electricity.
  4. If you have not accepted our latest terms and conditions yet, choose Accept.
  5. Choose Buy electricity.
  6. Select the account you would like to pay from.
  7. Choose the recipient you’d like to buy electricity for or enter the meter number.
  8. Enter the amount you want to buy electricity for.
  9. Review the details of your purchase and select Confirm.
  10. You will then get an SMS with your voucher code.

Note: Screen options may differ depending on your profile.

You can call the Nedbank Contact Centre on 0800 555 111. When you call, make sure you have your payment reference or meter number on hand.

A payment reference number is the number you receive after having bought your voucher. You will see this number under your historic purchases once you have selected the transaction in question.

If you make a purchase using a current or a savings account, the money will be returned to your account. If it is through a credit card, the money will not be refunded automatically. You will have to call the Nedbank Contact Centre on 0800 555 111 for help.

You can contact your municipality. Free electricity is offered by the municipality, and they decide who gets it. Not all municipalities offer free basic electricity.

 

There is no set period on when you can claim – the municipality decides this. Some municipalities issue it at the beginning of the month while some offer it in the middle of the month. 

Follow these steps to buy prepaid electricity:

  1. Log in to the Money app or Online Banking.
  2. Choose Buy from the menu on the dashboard.
  3. Choose Buy prepaid and claim electricity.
  4. Choose Prepaid electricity.
  5. Enter a meter number or choose a meter number from your saved recipients.
  6. Enter an amount.
  7. Select an account to buy from.
  8. Review your purchase and select Buy.
  9. You will see the purchase success screen.

  1. Log in to the Money app or Online Banking.
  2. Choose Buy from menu on the dashboard.
  3. Choose Buy prepaid and claim electricity.
  4. Choose Free basic electricity.
  5. Enter a meter number or choose a meter number from your saved recipients.
  6. Select Claim.
  7. You will see the claim successful screen.

  • There is a failure on the side of the service provider, eg Vodacom or MTN.

  • There are applications such as Truecaller on the device that block spam numbers.

  • The device has dual SIM cards and the one in use does not have the number that the bank has. 

  • Your cellphone number has changed but you have not updated it at the bank.

These are amounts charged by the municipality and may differ from one municipality to another.
